Why sold prices run higher than asking prices here

The two numbers on this page measure two different populations and should not be read as a markup. Asking prices describe what is listed on WAXED right now, which skews heavily toward electronic singles and club stock. Sold prices describe records changing hands across the wider second-hand market, where albums, older pressings and collectible first-presses are far better represented and pull the median up.

How these vinyl statistics are calculated

Every figure on this page is computed directly from WAXED's own marketplace database at page build, recomputed at most once an hour, and reported with the sample it was drawn from. Nothing is modelled, smoothed or projected.

• Asking prices are the listed price of every active individual listing, excluding shipping. Percentiles run over the entire population rather than a sample, so the median is exact rather than estimated.
• Sold prices come from sold listings tracked across the second-hand market, converted to USD and filtered to those matched to a catalogue release with reasonable confidence. The window each statistic covers is stated beside it.
• Medians, not averages. A handful of four-figure collectibles drags a mean well above what anyone actually pays; the median and the quartiles describe the typical record.
• What is deliberately absent. No per-release record prices, no “most expensive record sold” list, and no year-over-year trend line — the underlying matching and history are not yet accurate enough at that resolution to publish.
